My Students

I teach fifth grade students in the north east Los Angeles area. My students are curious, exuberant learners who really shine when given the opportunity to direct their own learning through research and projects. The majority of my students are English learners or recently reclassified english learners, many of whom struggle with grade level reading for a variety of reasons. Almost all of my students qualify for free/reduced lunch and our school is a Title 1 school. Very few of my students have access to computers at home, but they love to use technology to enhance their learning at school!

My Project

Technology has become an everyday tool for living and learning for all of us. Students are expected to be able to use technology to develop and exhibit vast content knowledge in the Common Core Standards. The end of year, high stakes, summative assessments are taken on computers. Students show high levels of motivation and engagement when they have the opportunity to use technology in the classroom.

Clearly, in today's learning environment students need access to technology in their classrooms and students with less access are at a distinct disadvantage.

Unfortunately, my school has just one Chromebook cart to be shared by the 3rd, 4th and 5th grade classes. Last year, my students had one hour a week to use the Chromebooks and this was simply not enough time for them to learn to do research or create projects. Access to technology is an equity issue and my students need and deserve equal access to all that technology can provide!

With these laptops, my students will be able to work individually and in small groups to practice skills, "publish" their writing, complete test practice sequences, and do research they can use to create their own computer based projects to share. In addition, I plan to use this mini computer lab for students to gain access to online reading materials because our classroom libraries have a limited number of books. The laptops will provide another avenue for me to provide differentiated learning opportunities to meet each of my students individually. I believe that with greater access to technology, my students will have increased engagement in school and be better equipped when they move on to middle school next year.
