Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My goal is to teach my preschool-8th grade students, specifically 6th-8th graders, to use their creativity to create useful items using a sublimation printer, heat press and various blanks. I want them to see that they can create amazing, touching, personalized items to gift to teachers, students and staff. I would also love for the older students to use the products as a fundraising opportunity. We will start with small useful, meaningful projects and move up to eventually create shirts that the students can wear in our uniform wearing school.
I would also love for their fundraising to help fund their amazing 8th grade graduation celebration at the end of the year.
Most of these students are together from PreSchool thru 8th grade. Our school goes all out to give them an end of year celebration to finalize their time together. Many students split off to different high schools and never see each other again. It would mean so much for them to take part in planning that event.
Lastly, I would love to give even a handful of students an option for a career and supplemental income. Coming from a mostly low income community, many students need to work to help support their families. My goal is for them to think outside the box and realize food service and retail are not the only options. I also realize that college is not a possibility for all of them. We have had students learn an art and a trade and end up putting themselves through college with the extra money. We have also had students go straight into graphic design using the skills they learned through similar classes at other schools. I would love to bring these ideas and opportunities to our school. I appreciate the opportunity and generosity.
