This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I serve a school where over 80% of our students come from low-income families and receive free or reduced-price lunch. Approximately, 45% are African American, 45% are Hispanic, and 20% are English language learners. My sixth-grade students are active and budding young adults, but they are still children. They have been given challenges that even some adults have a hard time dealing with. They come from very diverse households. They want to learn and do well even when the statistics are not in their favor. Many go home and care for siblings while their main caregiver works a second job, while some are homeless and need to worry more about where their next meal comes from instead of their math assignment.
I want to provide a learning environment where every student can come into and be successful.
I am working towards transforming my traditional classroom. I want my students to have all the opportunities to have a choice in how they learn with flexible seating options, a variety of math center activities, STEM/STEAM opportunities, and a classroom behavior system that encourages students to learn more each and every day.
Learning should be fun and creative. I would love for my students to have a Cricut machine to be able to bring their ideas to life. Their creations will allow me to enhance the content and vocabulary areas of the classroom. Also, we can use some of the items as math manipulatives to go with our lessons.
The Cricut Maker will allow me to provide another way to differentiate learning to my diverse learners.
Along with being able to enhance their education, the Cricut can be used to create shirts for students needing team or club shirts but cannot afford ones from our vendors. I will also be able to use the Cricut to create visuals and engaging bulletin boards for academics and motivation in less time than without it. Having a Cricut Maker will benefit both students and teachers.
