Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My colleagues and I work in a District 75 school in New York City which contains multiple self-contained classes of elementary students with various disabilities and learning needs. At our individual site, our school consisted of three 8:1:1 and two 6:1:1 classes at the K-2 age level. This upcoming year, we are transitioning one of the 8:1:1 classrooms to a 12:1:1 (meaning their success has shown they are able to function in a less restrictive environment!) as well as opening up an additional 12:1:1 classroom of incoming Kindergarteners. Therefore, we will have 2 classes at each the 12:1:1, 8:1:1 and 6:1:1 ratios and an increase in the overall number of students within our building. This project is aimed to support our entire building, rather than just one classroom - so when you donate you are impacting the learning of all 52 of our amazing, little students.

My Project

Within special education, especially at the Kindergarten level, providing visuals for our students is essential to their learning. My colleagues and I work in a District 75 school in New York City which contains multiple self-contained classes of elementary students with various disabilities and learning needs. Throughout all of our classrooms, each student is on an individualized, visual schedule - this means a lot of laminating and a lot of velcro! In addition, almost all of our classroom activities such as independent workstation tasks, small-group center activities, 1:1 tasks, etc. are laminated and adapted to meet the needs of all of our different students. There is a lot of prep work that goes into creating a lesson or providing a meaningful service session for our students. Currently, my colleagues and I are working off of our individually purchased, tiny laminators that feed only one page at a time and cannot laminate anything larger than a typical sheet of paper. Having a large laminator within our school for everyone to use would be a huge benefit to our entire building of students, teachers and support staff. As well, having the Ellison machine to create visual cut-outs for lessons and provided services would make a world of difference, too. Working here for the past few years, I can honestly say our school is filled with professionals who put so much time and effort into helping our students succeed. I know that this project would help our staff and students tremendously. We thank you in advance for helping us obtain the resources necessary to provide interactive, visual learning and independence within the classroom.
