Creating Virtual Reality & Experiencing Augmented Reality Worlds

My students need the ability to create virtual tours of our urban environment so that students not only view VR, but capture and create their own tours with a 360-degree camera.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach STEM to all elementary grades from Kindergarten to Grade 5 and see about 300 students a week for environmental science. My students are filled with curiosity and lots of questions, most of which I am honestly unable to answer. They pose great research questions, and they write them on our wonder wall so we can research and answer them.

My students live in a very urban Brooklyn neighborhood and come from low socio-economic families.

About 30% are English language learners, although many more students speak another language at home. What they lack in resources and experiences beyond the neighborhood, they more than make up for in their wonder and excitement for the world. My goal is to create learning experiences that bring to life the treasures of our natural and built environments using the integration of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

My Project

It is a wonder to have the tools to view virtual reality in the classroom and explore and discover places far away. We can experience the rainforests of Borneo and come up close to amazing insects, or dive deep into coral reefs and experience the vast biodiversity of marine life in the Coral Sea of Australia. In order to elevate student learning, a 360 camera would allow students to create and curate their own tours of their environment and build a sense of place that enables them to share tours of the natural and built world of their very urban setting.

The addition of a 360-degree camera would provide a great way to combine technology and science as part of a rich STEM program.

Using technology as both a tool for instruction and a tool to demonstrate learning is integral to STEM education. Students would be able to plan their own Google Tour, take photos, and use Tour Creator to guide viewers to learn about our community garden, the life cycle of plants, how to grow cilantro, tools for composting...and the list goes on.

The self-sticks would allow us to use augmented reality (AR) apps as part of our in-class investigations. There are many compelling uses of AR, especially in science instruction, which allows phenomena to be brought to students in ways that may be limited or impractical through physical models alone. The technology provides 360-degree views of volcanoes, dinosaurs, and the solar system, and brings these larger than life concepts into the classroom. Amazing!
