Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Imagine a school where the only access to books are textbooks or teacher-assigned novels. It's not the most conducive environment for reading is it? Our goal is to try to change the perception of reading at our school by creating class libraries filled with novels students can read for pleasure.

I work in a low-income urban area where a majority of students are English language learners.

My students are eager learners with tremendous potential to contribute to society in the future. They face many challenges that could stunt their growth or even divert them from this trajectory. The students in this community must not only learn how to move beyond the difficulty of being raised in an unsafe community, but must also overcome challenges inside the classroom due to deficiencies in funding. Teachers do the best they can to provide resources and materials, but cannot provide students with everything they deserve. Even with all these circumstances stacked against my students, they've learned to thrive.

My Project

Imagine a school without a library and how the students at this school already start at a disadvantage from many other students around the nation. This is my school and these are my students. They deserve to have access to books they can read so they may develop a love for reading. My school has begun an initiative to give students a time and space to read leisurely in order to encourage literacy, which my students struggle with. The goal is to create a mini library in every classroom where students can visit and borrow books from. In addition to having a library in every classroom, students are given a 10-15 minute block of time in their advisory class where they can read any book of their choosing. Once they finish with the book, they can check out another one. I intentionally chose books that came in a series to encourage students to continue reading on after they finish a book.

My classroom currently lacks a library and thus I am unable to support the school's literacy initiative.

These books will help start up my classroom library and provide resources for student they normally do not have. By having easy access to books, students at my school can begin to develop an appreciation for literature. At the same time, their reading, writing, and speaking abilities will naturally improve.
