My Project

We asked kids, “What are lines?” They used their hands and arms to show horizontal lines moving away from their chests and across their bodies. Then, we took a walking trip down the second floor hallway, looking for lines. Kids partnered up to find vertical, diagonal, curved and zigzag lines all around them, noticing different lines’ lengths and thicknesses, on the walls, windows, doors and ceiling. Back in the classroom, we examined examples of paintings that artists have created using lines. One child said that Piet Mondrian’s Composition II in Red, Blue, and Yellow painting looked like a robot, while another commented that Tina Lavole’s Gilded Cage looked like french fries. The class was so inspired by the different line paintings that they made their own art–tempura paintings, watercolors and construction paper collages–using different kinds of lines.

When we looked at numbers and letters, the children also recognized that they’re all made up of horizontal, vertical, diagonal and curved lines, too.

This line exploration is the beginning of the many activities we’ll be doing to help kids learn how our letters and numbers are created as we prepare to focus on learning to write numbers and letters. The wooden pieces from Learning Without Tears program will give children a hands-on learning experience with forming capital letters in small groups.
