My Students

Did you have an engaging and meaningful social studies experience in elementary school? Did you learn about multiple perspectives and question history? My students need resources to make social studies more than learning facts. They need resources to learn a new way to look at history.

My diverse classroom is eager to learn and conduct research.

Our school is very large and struggles to provide resources for subjects like social studies and science. My students love learning about the 1800s because of the adventure and change in the United States because of people who took a risk. Most of my students are struggling readers and need to do research in small groups. Having multiple copies of books provides assistance.

My Project

I have selected text such as "Split Perspectives" to assist in guiding my students through thinking about both sides of a historical event. In addition, the other selected text specifically define vocabulary and use pictures to communicate difficult ideas. I want my social studies units to have meaning and multiple perspectives. I want my students to be able to access information through various resources that are at their reading level. I envision my students using these resources to have an understanding that people take risks when immigrating and have the power to change a place. My students will be able to have meaningful conversations and create research projects that have meaning. Through using these resources students will hopefully carry this idea that people can a change place into future studies of history.

I want thinkers, not fact consumers in my classroom.

I want my social studies units to assist students in an inquiry study of historical concepts, not a retelling of a traditional history.
