My Students

How do we learn? Is it from books, notes, and lecture? Or can we find a way to create, unique hands-on experiences that ask our students to find learning in ways they never thought possible?

I believe that encouraging STEM education and bringing unique hands-on learning experiences into our school is a vital part of helping our students, both academically, socially, and in preparation for the world beyond high school.

I am a high school science teacher from a large urban fringe school district. Our school has roughly 80% of students on free or reduced lunch. Due to the economy, funds are often short at home, as well as at school. Resources to extend learning opportunities are hard to come by with funding cuts coming year after year. I want to be able to give my students the world, but I only have the resources to give them a slice of it. This is where you come in!

My Project

The requested items in the proposal will be used to not only offer our entire school the ability to utilize a fantastic Makerspace/Innovation Lab, but spark creativity and 21st-century learning in a project-based learning classroom setting.

Our requested items will help guide our students along new pathways of learning and inspire our students to peruse careers with future skill sets that will shape how our future society will look in the next generation.

They will be able to follow pathways in 3D design and additive manufacturing, using 3D printers and filament. Our students will be able to explore the world of mechatronics, robotics, and the internet of things, by utilizing the easy to program platforms of the micro:bit, Sphero RVR, Mavic Mini drone and connected sensors. In addition to the items above, we are requesting storage for these items as well as additional consumable materials for our glowforge laser cutter (used in 3D design and subtractive manufacturing) as well as our vinyl cutter (putting the art in STEAM!); both items help support the 8 essential technologies and push for students to look towards futures in STEM.

As we look towards the uncertainty of this fall and the possibility of our students being educated from a distance learning environment, these STEM tools will allow me to create a seamless digital transition. The Sphero RVR robots, as well as the micro:bit kits all offer virtual, web-based curriculum that will allow my students to prototype, design and tinker from home, and then check out the item from the lab to create from home!
