This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have a room full of energetic, creative, hard-working students. The demands of the common core classroom have changed the first grade experience. The rigorous academic demands can create stress among our students, it is a challenge to find ways to keep our students engaged and relaxed during the school year. School is a place for learning, but learning can also be so much fun! Our elementary school has recently become a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) Academy. I am always looking for ways to allow my students to explore and express themselves through hands-on activities, art and movement. STEAM activities and materials such as the ones I am hoping to be granted are great exploration and learning materials.

Through the use of these STEAM materials and kits, students will work cooperatively and creatively to construct and engineer structures and contraptions to solve problems and to express themselves.

I have always provided basic building materials for students such as small building blocks, dominoes, cups, pattern blocks, straws, connecting cubes, popsicle sticks, and rubber bands. I am seeking new materials and activities to add to our collection so that my students can continue to build skills for the future.

My Project

Since becoming a STEAM Academy, I have focused on developing my skills in teaching Science and Math. My goal this year is to continue working on Engineering along with the Art components. The materials that I am seeking funding for will allow the students to use their imagination, create structures that serve a specific purpose, and allow students to explore various building materials. At times students will have the opportunity to explore freely and creatively, other times, they may work using specific task cards with a final outcome in mind. The students may be working individually with LEGOs, trying to build a mode of transportation, while another group of kids may be working with K'Nex to complete the same task. Ultimately the students may test run models and collect data on speed, distance, strength of model, and compare structures and see which one is more efficient. -NGSS Engineering Design ETS1-3 (k-2) Analyze data from tests of an object or tool to determine if it works as intended.

The potential learning through these activities is endless; I see the possibilities of students creating sketches, documenting their work through technology and ultimately creating a presentation for others.

Through the use of these materials, the NGSS (Next Generation Science Standards) in Engineering will also be addressed. For example, in Engineering Design (K-2) ETS, a problem will be identified and students will work together to create a model to address problem. I am looking forward to challenging my students to create their ideal playground through these building materials.

As mentioned earlier, students have used everyday classroom materials for these tasks. I am now challenging myself as an educator and allowing my students to use various materials and technology to create, experiment and express themselves through the use of these materials. Future Engineers!
