My Students

My students are a thoughtful and creative group of fifth graders growing up in a rural town in the heart of Oklahoma. The majority of my students have spent the last year completely virtual. Academic growth was greatly impacted, as many students struggled to adjust to the demands of learning from behind a screen amid the distractions of home. Thankfully, we are all back together this year and embarking on new adventures as we reconnect with each other and the lives of the characters we read and write about in our literacy classroom. Being together is the best part of our classroom, especially this year.

These twenty-first century learners are in constant pursuit of new knowledge and enjoy engaging projects that highlight their strengths and relate to their personal struggles.

My hope is to empower students with the life skills necessary to navigate the obstacles life presents them through literacy!

My Project

The ability to communicate and collaborate is a staple in my fifth grade reading and writing classroom. Since the majority of my fifth grade students spent this past year learning behind a screen as a result of the pandemic, adjusting back to the school environment has been difficult. Students have had to relearn how to work effectively and engage in academic conversations with others face to face. Promoting more occasions for such engagement in my literacy classroom is the goal of this project.

With the new resources from this project, my students will be able to choose from a variety of books that will allow them opportunities to read engaging, print-rich literature alongside their peers.

One of the best ways to increase student reading and writing abilities is to create spaces for more reading in the classroom. Through rich discussion and meaningful reflection, students will enhance both reading and writing skills. These skills will be further reinforced as students design and engage in game-based review of their learning.

These novels and collaborative-based resources will encourage my students' personal and academic growth, foster community, and promote positive connections within my classroom.
