Creating some real chemistry!

My students need basic chemical supplies such as sodium hydroxide, hydrochloric acid, iodine and more for hands-on experiments as students that actively participate in the laboratory will increase their understanding and learning.

My Students

In 8th grade students learn physical science which includes physics, chemistry and astronomy. We are now starting the chemistry section and how are you supposed to learn chemistry without the chemicals. My class needs a supply of chemicals for our laboratories.

My school is a very low income public school in Los Angeles, where all of the students receive free lunch.

My students are in the magnet program and are very motivated and intelligent individuals. They are capable of attending good high schools and college, they just need some help along the way. I am trying to give (or build on) them a love of science as careers in science are severely lacking in minority populations so any push in this direction is a help for them. They have applied to good high schools including one of the top math/science schools in the state.

My Project

My class needs basic chemicals in order to conduct various experiments in our chemistry unit. The class will work on acid/base labs, exo/endothermic reactions, acid reactions with metals, and a forensic lab to catch a criminal with urine samples (simulated urine of course!). The materials that are being requested will last in my classroom for two years of experiments. This year I have received a new classroom that will hopefully become my home base for years to come so I am attempting to make it an immersive science experience as much as possible. Unfortunately, we do not even have a periodic table on the wall that is visible to the students. These materials will definitely be a vital part of raising the understanding, learning and enjoyment of my students.

Think back to when you were in school and your science class.

What was the most memorable experiences? It is always the labs that you recall the most. Doing complicated labs in the classroom, is something that most teachers do not want to bother with as it adds extra work. I believe however it is my duty to engage my students as much as possible to keep their interest and help them learn and retain as much as possible. These labs will undoubtedly leave them both interested and motivated.
