Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

As a teacher, I try to always make learning fun and useful in real life. During June, I had an amazing opportunity to volunteer at a STEM event for girls and their parents called, STEM Like a Girl. During the workshop, I helped the girls create solar powered fans using small solar panels and little electric motors. It was a fantastic success and such an important lesson. I want to recreate this activity in my classroom next year.

My students need these solar panels and motors to create their own machines powered by renewable energy.

This activity will be one of 5 experiments they do in a unit about electricity, circuits, and renewable energy. I think that teaching them about these topics is not only really important for their future, but also super fun for kids. When they wire an electric circuit together and apply power to it, you should see the joy in the room. The moment their machine works, or their light begins to shine, there are literal cheers of joy. Even though I have never taught the solar powered fan experiment with my own class, I am excited to add it to the unit and give it a try. I just need help getting the basic supplies.
