My Students

My students are eager learners who come to school every day filled with excitement. When school started in September, they set goals for themselves based on what they would like to accomplish by the end of the school year. Some examples were, “I want to be able to read by myself”, and “I want to read harder books.” For my students, it will take a lot of hard work to reach these goals, as they receive special education services. Reading is an area of weakness for the majority of my students. They receive reading support in the general education classroom, as well as in my resource room. Classroom teachers do a wonderful job of differentiating to meet students’ needs, but sometimes my students need a little something extra. They need multi-sensory resources to help them learn and remember new information.

My Project

Sight words are high frequency words that are phonetically irregular. They make up a high proportion of the materials we read everyday. When students are able to identify them, they are able to read with more fluency. However, because these words don't follow regular phonics patterns, students have to rely on memorization to read them. This can be especially difficult for my population of students.

Every student has a different method of learning.

Some students learn best visually. Others learn through movement (kinesthetics). Some may need to hear the information. Students with disabilities benefit from a multi-sensory approach to learning. This allows them to have material presented to them in a variety of ways, making it easier for them to commit content to memory.

The SnapWords program will help my students to access sight words in a variety of ways: visually, kinesthetically, and auditorily. Each word is presented with an image, a meaningful phrase that incorporates the word, and a matching movement. By learning words using multiple cuing systems, my students will have higher success with memorizing sight words. In turn, they will have an increased ability to read and will be able to focus more on decoding phonetically regular words.
