My Students

I teach English learner students in grades K-5 at an elementary school on the Big Island in Hawaii. My students represent many different cultures and economic backgrounds. Most of my students are "disadvantaged" due to their economic backgrounds.

Although my students may be facing challenges in their lives, they are always eager to learn new things.

Our school has been using a state-mandated reading and math curriculum. Many of our students are struggling, especially with the reading curriculum. Our students experience difficulty relating to the stories shared in the reading curriculum because of their limited exposure to different climates and cultures. Many of our students have never left the Hawaiian islands; therefore, their personal experiences are minimal.

My Project

This school year I will be servicing about 65 students in grades K-5. I'm excited to be able to welcome back our students to in person learning once again. However, due to the uptick in positive COVID 19 cases on our island, I would like to add another layer of safety to stop the spread of germs within our classroom.

This project will allow all of my English Language students to have their own personal "cubby" to store their learning materials in.

Each student will be assigned a plastic bin with their name on it. The bins will be used to hold their pencil pouches, mini fidget toy, folder, workbook, etc. The cubby units will be used to organize and store each of my student's bin. I'd like to also assign each student their own mini fidget pop it toy. The pop it toy will be used as an incentive. Students will be able to earn minutes with their pop it toy after work completion or as a "brain break" activity. Pop its are the new craze that helps reduce anxiety for children. I'd also like to reward positive behavior by either allowing students to play with the larger pop it toys for a few minutes. The larger pop it toys will be disinfected after every use to ensure safety for all students because it will be shared amongst students. The plastic containers will be used to store student incentives. Lastly, the wireless doorbell will be used for classroom management. I will utilize the doorbell to signal clean up or rotate.
