Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Music expresses that which cannot be said, and on which it is impossible to be silent." Hugo. Many of my students struggle with reading, writing, and even speaking the English language. In my classroom they are able to communicate their feelings in a different type of way to boost their confidence.

Who are my students?

They are America's future rock stars! At least they are in my classroom. My students range in grades from kindergarten to fifth grade. I see approximately 600 of them per week. Over 80% of my students qualify for free and reduced lunch. Many of my students speak English as a second language. What are they like? They are always eager to try anything. They contribute ideas and ways of interpreting, and playing songs that I would never be able to come up with. Over 50% of my students are of a minority, which adds a unique cultural flavor to my classroom. What kind of school do they attend? My students are fortunate to attend a newly built public school. However, it has taken a few years of transition for our students to reach a norm. Four years ago our school was used to house two other elementary schools. This meant that we were over capacity with 1,400 students. We are also a Title I school. This means that a majority of my students are economically disadvantaged.

My Project

My students need 19 acoustic guitars to begin their journey to communicate through music. Guitars would change my students lives because all children benefit from and love music! In my classroom I always tell my students, "someone may try to take away everything you own, but they can never take away your talent and education." The knowledge of playing music is something they can take with them for the rest of their lives. Music helps these children in many other areas such as math, communication, and most of all, confidence. It is also therapeutic in a way that they can learn without pressure. Music creates an environment where students at higher and lower levels of learning can be on level ground. With this gift, my students will to able to: learn to read music, play an instrument, perform for their peers and community, and build a sense of pride in their accomplishments. Finally, learning how to play the guitar will open doors for them in the future. For example, in a college with a scholarship, or in the music industry.

You can make a difference with your donations by providing students with a gift that they can never lose.

This gift will open doors for these children in the future. Perhaps one day you will see them in concert, on television, or playing at your child's wedding. Even many of our former presidents and politicians were also gifted musicians, too! The possibilities are endless!
