I teach third, fourth, and fifth grade students in a inner city school of high needs students. My class is a special education classroom in a public school. All of the students in the classroom have reading and language delays. These delays are not being met due to our school's lack of adaptive reading materials.

My students have shown a high interest in reading books of their own choice within the classroom. These books, which are mostly high-interest, low-level books are in demand. However, the students are not getting as much out of the books because they are not able to focus. Some students cannot follow a single line in the story. Other students need to hear themselves read in order to understand what is going on. Still other students have trouble extending their reading for longer times.

These students need materials to make them feel successful. The more success these children have, the more confidence they will gain, which will allow the students to think for themselves and achieve greater things. With the aide of materials to help their reading, students can read independently. WhisperPhones provide the support of students hearing themselves talk, so that they can read aloud to themselves for better understanding. The highlighting tape will help them see meaningful word parts while reading aloud. The small reading strips will aide their independent reading. The large pointers will help while we are reading together as a class. The bookmark timers will help the students monitor their own reading and become independent in keeping track of their own reading.

With the help of these aides, my students will be able to become independent readers and thinkers. They will learn the skills necessary to continue their education and better themselves. Without this support at the cusp of middle school, they might disregard education because of the reading demands.
