This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember curling up with a great book and traveling in time? You were so engaged and didn't want the story to end! I want my students to have this feeling and continue their reading outside of the classroom. We need copies of these class novels because we only have one class set to share.

My students are from various working class neighborhoods in the New Haven area.

They are bused to my school in search of better opportunities and access to rigorous education. They are hard working children, willing to leave their neighborhoods in order to gain the quality education they deserve. My school is a K-8 magnet dedicated to exploration and creating new ways of thinking and ideas. The students are the leaders and the teachers the facilitators. Most have known each other since Kindergarten, so there is a strong sense of community and comradery . They are a learning community that deserve the opportunity to aim and achieve with the proper resources. We are surrounded by phenomenal ivy league schools, and I know my students need to feel assured that they too can attend those places of higher education. I am confident that through literacy anything can be achieved.

My Project

I am requesting two novels, "Getting Away with Murder: The True Story of the Emmett Till" and "Monster," for each child in my classroom because they deserve to be able to access the literature at home and not only in class. Classes are 50 minutes long, and we cannot rush and read from the novels because we don't have enough for everybody. They should be able to engage the text from home, to respond in their Reader/Writers notebook. They must be able to cite quotes from the novels from home without trying to use their memory as a resource. With the new Common Core standards my students need to have text-based evidence in all that we will be doing in class: PowerPoint/Prezi presentations, essays, poetry, songs, court trials, debates, tweets and even memes.

I believe that your assistance will give my students the confidence in knowing that others have their best interest in mind, and that education matters not only to their teacher and parents but to a larger global community.

I will be sure to instill a responsibility in them-- to a larger community of book/education lovers. They will complete these two novels and gain adequate experience in citing sources and creating through text-based learning. They will be engaged, guaranteed!
