My Students

One size does not fit all, especially in a multiple grade classroom. Having computers in our room in which the students can tailor their learning environment for both the gifted as well as the struggling student will greatly enhance the learning experience for all of our students.

I am a teacher to nineteen wonderfully unique and energetic Native American children in a small school in rural South Dakota.

My students are just like any other 4th and 5th grade students living in the United States. They are curious about the world around them. They want to learn to read and to do math so that they will be able to have good jobs and raise families. Living in this poverty stricken area does have its disadvantages, but the educators here are determined to have our students have an educational experience as robust and academically sound as any other child in the US. My dear students have had the disadvantage of having prior disingenuous teachers whose main goal was a paycheck and not the guiding academically and socially of the precious children entrusted to them. The result is a group of children anxious to read, to explore, and most of all to succeed in being high achieving students. What was never taken from them is their indomitable spirit. Thank goodness!

My Project

I am requesting two modestly priced HP laptop computers with CD drives specifically for my students to use. Having these computers will allow my students to take advantage of such terrific programs such as IXL, Study Island, Alek's, Renaissance, and Tumble books for both guided tutoring as well as independent practice. While my paraprofessional and myself strive to provide individualized learning opportunities, the simple truth is there is not enough time in the day to do individual instruction for 19 students. Technology based learning programs are designed to go along with the pace of each student's learning; challenging those students more gifted, and slowing the pace for the struggling or emergent student. Allowing students two at a time to immerse themselves into individual learning will allow them to grow and achieve more quickly.

"I'm bored!" "This is too hard!" The balance to keep teaching at a level for all to be successful is very hard.

Having computers for the students to excel at their individual pace will help alleviate these situations, and will foster in my students the idea that they can and will be successful. Self-guided learning can and is successful learning. I can't wait to see just how far they will go when given this additional learning opportunity. Their future is so bright, I will have to get shades!
