My Students

Concerns about money, warm clothing, or their next meal: these are things children shouldn't have to worry about, yet my students face these issues daily and still come to school excited to learn and create! Our school is a high-poverty, Title I school, with an Economic Need Index of 82.5%.

Artistic expression is a universal language.

Half of my students are new to this country and are working hard to learn a new language. In my art classes, I try to create opportunities for my students to be successful during that process!

I am consistently amazed by their innovative ideas. Given the right resources, there is no telling what my students can accomplish.

My Project

I am not sure exactly how school will look in September and I am even more unsure about how Art Education will look. I do, however, know that my students will be expected to wear masks. There will be so many changes and new procedures, it could be a little scary for students. I am creating this project to hopefully help the kids realize that wearing a mask doesn't have to be a scary thing

I want them to understand that wearing a mask is important, and by personalizing the masks students can be creative and proud to show them off.

I am hoping, since they are the ones creating their very own custom masks, it will give my students a sense of ownership and they will want to take care of their masks and wear them proudly.
