Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

It's not unusual to hear many different languages spoken as you walk along the streets of New York City. This phenomenon is especially true at our school as our student body is made entirely of international students. Science, however, is a universal language that is understood by all.

Our school is a small Title I school located in the heart of Queens, the most diverse county in the United States.

All of my students are English language learners (ELLs). They come from every part of the globe seeking a new life of opportunity and freedom here in the United States. They come with the hope that education will allow them to meet their full potential. In addition to starting a new life in a new country, the incredible challenge they must overcome is to graduate in the same 4 years as native English speakers. My students must master the same tests and curriculum as in other high schools, all while learning a new language. In order to help them do this, we teach hands-on projects that engage them in real-life problems. Science is a tool for answering questions about themselves and society. This project uses DNA to answer "Who am I?" and "How am I related to others?"

My Project

Using biotechnology to study DNA in the classroom is essential for preparing students for careers in science, but unfortunately, it's very expensive. We have many of the tools for this type of work through very generous donations from DonorsChoose, but the chemical reagents, restriction enzymes and PCR primers, and other consumables must be purchased every year to provide the incoming students with the same experiences and to maintain the program. My students need mtDNA extraction/PCR/gel electrophoresis kits and PCR primer sets to learn about human genomic diversity. In order to continue providing my students with biotechnology experiences, we need to replace the exhausted kits that are the backbone of our laboratory activities. Your donations will help us keep real lab-based genomic science in our curriculum.

My job is to do everything in my power to help my students graduate high school, advance to college, and become scientifically-literate citizens.

As a science teacher, my goal is to unleash my students' natural curiosity about the world around us. Your donation will allow them to explore fundamental questions about human existence while they practice the biotechnology skills that are key to the careers of the future. Thank you!
