This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Race is an ever-present issue in my students lives. They are all non-white immigrants who hear themselves cast as "others" in media and from government officials and presidential candidates. Racial equity is an issue at the forefront of political debates and economic justice. They still want to know: What IS race?

Race is a social construct that has real impacts on people's health and well-being, but it is not based in genetics or any other field of biology.

I want to empower my students to understand the role of race in our world, and how to deconstruct the damage it can do to themselves, their families, and society. Also, by using real science experiments and methods to debunk the myth of race, I want them to see themselves as geneticists and molecular biologists.

With the reagents I am requesting, my students will test and compare their DNA, DNA of teachers and community members, and sequences available online. By comparing real DNA from people of different "races" they can test their misconceptions about relatedness and otherness, and see that skin color or eye shape are poor predictors of intelligence, character, kindness, or even what is in our genes.

Using the tools of the scientific method, students will be able to see that race is something people ascribe to one another to maintain unfair power structures. In our small lab, we can prove that race has no basis in our genes or DNA. This is a powerful revelation as we debunk genetic arguments that have been made about race superiority or inferiority. In reality, we all have more in common than divides us. We are all one human race.
