This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Remember what it was to be in Kindergarten? A typical day in my classroom is busy, busy, busy! My students are active and enjoy exploring. Their young minds need tools and meaningful experiences. We are a Title 1 school with a very high percentage of low income families. While poverty and language can be barriers for my students, I like to create a learning environment that makes their learning fun.

As their teacher, I want the best for my students in and out of the classroom.

I must create an environment where my students can express themselves, but they need the tools to have a creative and meaningful experience in kindergarten.

My Project

Reading can take you places you've never been. With these materials my students will be able to express themselves, explore, and find connections through integrated activities. My students will be able to use music, together with dance, theater, and visual arts for storytelling. These materials will make a difference because my students' learning will be supported as they are used to retell familiar stories, create stories, and have constructive conversations.

I recently attended a professional development in which taught me how to integrate the arts with language arts, math, science, and social science.

I learned with the tambourine, ukulele, and sound shapes I can teach students phonemic awareness. For example, in language arts if a student is segmenting a word, for each word the student can hit the tambourine. I also learned that with the dance scarves I can use them to integrate theater and language arts. The students will read a story and then with the scarves students can be divided into groups in which then they can use the director's chair, megaphone and scarves as a manipulative to pantomime the beginning, middle, and end of the story. I learned how to use bean bags for math. For example, my kindergarteners can use them in a game in which the use the bean bags to pass and count to add and make number sentences.

Imagine reading a story and being able to express it through movements, music, and voice. Imagine students singing and dancing and finding a connection between an art form and either math, language arts, science and social science.
