Creating Mathematical Thinkers and Problem Solvers

My students need math manipulatives, like folding shapes, unifix cubes, and color tiles, to help challenge and enrich their mathematical thinking skills.

My Students

Were you ever bored in class because the content was just not challenging enough? My high level math students need the opportunity to be challenged and to enrich their mathematical thinking skills.

I have a class of 33 sixth graders who come from diverse families and financial means.

Many of them cannot afford basic school supplies and often do not get academic help at home because their families do not understand their homework or they don't have time to help them. If I was able to challenge the higher level math students with work they can explore independently, many of my struggling students would be able to have more and better access to me to help improve their own math skills.

My Project

When my high level math students finish their work early, I'd like to offer them time at math centers to enrich their mathematical thinking skills. Each challenge in these math centers have the opportunity to expose my students to dozens of mathematical concepts (integers, estimation, area, perimeter, etc.). Using these manipulatives, they will be working on problem-solving, identifying patterns, algebraic reasoning and determining algebraic relationships, just to name a few. They will have the opportunity to work independently or collaboratively as a team. This will be a time for exploration and an opportunity for my students to discover and see the logic and order of mathematics. These are challenging activities, but also a lot of fun. I have seen students work on a challenge over the course of a few days and the pride and sense of accomplishment they feel after solving it is priceless!

With your donation, you will be helping to provide the mathematical manipulatives that are critical to the process of these math center challenges.

Students need to be given the opportunity to not only see math as two-dimensional on paper, but as three dimensional and meaningful. Manipulatives will allow students to move shapes/pieces around to determine patterns and actually SEE the patterns (and often see the way other students SEE the patterns), creating flexible and critical thinkers.
