This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have lucked out with the sweetest group of 4th graders. They genuinely care about their classroom family and are always ready to welcome new students in at a moments notice. My kiddos have been fantastic at adapting to my classroom motto “I don’t expect you to be perfect, I DO expect you to try your best.” They demonstrate this motto every day through peer discussions, collaborating during partner work, and finding their own mistakes and correcting them. I’ve been amazed at the progress they’ve made, both academically and emotionally. Especially after everything they’ve had to overcome from the pandemic. Their resilience blows me away and I can only imagine the wonderful things they will do in the future.

My Project

My school places an emphasis and celebrates students fully reading series. We do this because research shows kids learn to enjoy reading more when they get invested in specific characters in a book series. I teach math and science, but incorporate reading every chance I get because I understand the importance of it. When students struggle in reading, they typically struggle in most of the other subjects as well.

I want to be able to allow my students to dive into the world of books, while still learning key mathematical concepts.

I have added a few math book series, such as the Sir Cumference and A Math Adventure series'. I plan to introduce a book out of each series as a whole group read-aloud, while drawing connections to the math skill we are working on at the time. The rest of the books will be available for the students to read during independent time if they would like. In addition, I have added some leveled math readers so I can pull small reading groups while still teaching math concepts.

My hopes are to spark a love for reading and math in each of my students through my math library.
