My Students

Enter the classroom. Take out a book and a pencil. Begin working - your pencil breaks. You sharpen your pencil. Pencil breaks again - resharpen. This happens over and over each day with the five classes and one hundred students I teach. Imagine you would never need to worry about a broken point?

My students come from low income households.

One hundred percent of the students in the school receive free lunch. Students are often not provided with the essential school supplies they need and teachers find themselves providing students with notebooks, pencils, pens, erasers, and even bookbags from their own personal money. Students are unable to focus on their school work because they are too worried about being judged for coming to school empty handed or not being able to bring in required materials.

My Project

I must give out over thirty pencils a day, usually getting very few of them returned at the end of the period. Throughout math class, students are constantly being disrupted by the sound of the pencil sharpener. Often students are deep in their work and are stopped because their pencil breaks. In addition, students LOVE using anything but pencil and paper to work. Students enjoy using our class Smart Board, or using our class set of dry erase lap boards. However, it becomes pricey to keep purchasing new boards due to scratching and dry erase markers don't last long enough when one hundred students as a day use them. I would be able to quickly assess students during a lesson by having them hold up their Boogie Boards to see their work and responses. Students would be engaged and would never be interrupted because their pencil breaks or would be embarrassed because they once again do not have the necessary supplies for class.

My students lack the basic math skills and fundamentals needed to master the eighth grade common core curriculum.

Time is essential in our class and too much time is wasted over distributing supplies, having students searching for their class supplies, or being ashamed that their family will not provide them the necessary class materials. Students would be engaged in learning because they are using a brand new tool instead of the boring old pencil and paper.
