This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach at a Title I school, where my students come from low socio-economic backgrounds. The majority of my students are on free or reduced lunch, some have learning disabilities and many are English language learners.

Despite these challenges, they still come to school eager to learn.

I am excited that I get to witness my students learning and growing!

Everyday when I come to school, I get asked so many questions from my little, eager-to-learn students. My students are risk-takers in the classroom and are always trying new things... It is inspiring!

My Project

My students are third graders and have not learned much history about the Holocaust. We have had some small discussions, but this book will open their eyes to what people faced during the Holocaust. The book, "Number the Stars," by Lois Lowry will introduce my students to the horrors of the Holocaust, while also allowing them to connect to the characters. The books are a great way to introduce history, vocabulary and comprehension skills in a whole group setting.

These books are a way for my students to learn the history of the Holocaust along with the harsh realities that many families faced during this time period.

When I was a third grader in school, my teacher gave us "Number the Stars" to read as a class. The impact from this book has stuck with me throughout my entire life and now I want to be able to give that back to my third grade students. They will read about the prejudices that Jewish people faced all over Europe. This book will be their very first introduction to the Holocaust and it will surely be a memorable one. My students are avid readers and we have been trying to find the perfect novel to read together as a class- this novel is just that!
