My Students

Do you remember when you first fell in love with reading? Do you remember waiting patiently for a new book series to come out or for the next book in the series? Books help students develop in so many ways.

Students in my school are from a variety of backgrounds and poverty levels.

Students come to school to be loved and to experience a safe and loving atmosphere. Part of providing this type of atmosphere is to give them books in which to escape their everyday lives and for a tiny amount of time they get to live through the characters in the book(s) they are reading.

Students in my classroom love all aspects of reading. The beg to be read to, to read in a small group, and to read independently.

The school district that I work in is small with most students coming from non-English speaking homes. More than half of the students are from low-income households and about 70% qualify for free and/or reduced lunch. These students all come to school to be loved and to learn. I want to give them the best opportunities that I possibly can to succeed in life.

My Project

Providing students with different reading options helps to create lifelong readers. In my classroom, students are just beginning their reading journey. I want to be able to provide as many resources as possible to help stem that love for reading.

Students are excited to pick up a book and escape the realities they are facing today.

So many have experienced loss or never knowing what is going to happen day-to-day. During Covid-19, school was shut-down and the ability to read anything was diminished. Now, students are back in the classroom and more ready to learn than ever.

Students can always escape into a book. Reading for pleasure develops higher academic learning. Students that read develop higher reading levels and a stronger understanding of vocabulary. Reading allows for understanding of different reading strategies. The possibilities are endless.
