My Students

In order to become life-long readers, students have to read. Students are more likely to read when they are motivated and engaged in a text. However, many students think reading is "boring" and does not relate to them. The use of Young Adult Literature can help motivate students to read

My students have many different attitudes towards reading.

While some of my students enjoying reading, others aren't so crazy about it. However, many times I find that students don't read because they have never experienced reading a book that they can truly connect and relate to. Through Silent Sustained Reading (SSR) last year, a number of my students found books for SSR that they enjoyed. Some students told me this was the first book they read on their own in years, if ever. When students discover this in one book, they want to read even more books to discover more. Providing my students access to a variety of Young Adult Literature motivates them to want to read. In turn, they become stronger readers. They also become life-long readers.

My Project

This project will enable me to build my classroom library for my students. Students will have many more choices available to them right in the classroom for SSR. I will be able to introduce my students to titles, authors, and genres they were not aware of before. I hope to be able to open their eyes to the wonders and benefits of reading. When students enjoy what they are reading, they want to read more. As students read more, they will strengthen and develop skills vital to becoming life-long readers.

As a teacher, I want to share my passion for reading with my students.

I want them to see the value of reading and how reading can be enjoyable and beneficial. Providing my students with access to these Young Adult Novels will help foster an appreciation and love for reading. These skills will not just help them in the classroom, but will help to ensure their success throughout their lives.
