Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Have you heard the saying "Readers become leaders"? I firmly believe this is true, but not all kids have the opportunity to get books in their hands. My kids have limited resources and often their school library is the place they rely on to get them started on their journey.

My students are a wonderful group of kids ranging from Kindergarten to 5th grade who face a unique set of challenges.

The majority are from low income homes and a large percentage of them live in foster care or other out of home placements. A lot of these kids don't have money for books or a means to get to the public library. Many of them have no permanent home and can fit all their belongings in a duffel bag. They want to succeed and they want to read but many are lacking access to current, interesting books and others are reading below grade level so they feel that reading just isn't for them. Unfortunately, our school library has received no money to buy new books for the second year in a row. I want to give these kids some new, eye catching books to prove to them that they can be readers and to show them that we believe they're worth the effort and resources it will take to help them become leaders.

My Project

I've tried to create a book list with something for everyone. I've chosen some graphic novels which will inspire even the lowest level readers to pick up a book. I've also included the high interest, low level chapter books which are stepping stones for students, particularly boys, who think they can't read a whole novel. I've also chosen a wonderful supply of the newest titles in picture books. These are great for story times which are important because, once I've read the book to them and discussed it with them, they often have the confidence to pick it up and tackle it themselves. The non-fiction titles on my list will help them explore their world in a visually stunning way, especially the popular Steve Jenkins animal books, and I've included wonderful biographies that explore a wide variety of cultural experiences to inspire these kids to reach for their dreams even if their current circumstances discourage them.

These children are so special but, through no fault of their own, they have been dealt with really challenging circumstances.

They deserve the best we can give them, including a current library with clean, undamaged books to help them develop into lifelong readers. Your donations will provide them with new, modern books that will catch their interest and bring the power of reading and knowledge within their grasp. Readers become leaders and these kids deserve a chance to become exactly that.
