This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Project

Students with disabilities thrive in learning environments where they are supported through modeling learning materials such as hands-on manipulatives. During instruction, I provide students with multiple appropriate ways to communicate understanding of the new learning concepts. They will learn gestures such as American Sign Language, pointing to visual or concrete representations, using assistive technology, circling, highlighting, drag and drop, orally communicating, and so much more. By explicitly teaching students both the academic content and how to use the lesson materials, students are able to actively engage in the lessons and communicate their understanding of complex concepts in a manner that is appropriate to their support needs.

My goal for this project is to improve underperforming students' state testing scores by giving my students learning materials that excite them and create a love of learning.

I am an innovative educator with high expectations for my students, but I meet them where they are and help them grow. I create lessons that offer movement and collaboration to help students work on both their academic skills as well as their communication and social skills. Fourth grade is a big year for state testing in the state of Florida, and I want to give my students the support they need to succeed.

All students can thrive when they are supported in their academics, and it is the responsibility of the educators to provide differentiated support. Our school is a Title One school serving a one hundred percent economically disadvantaged student population. In the 2023-2024 school year, ninety-two percent of students identify as racial and ethnic minority populations. During the 2024-2025 school year, I will be teaching in a combined fourth and fifth grade classroom for students with communication and social skills support needs. Most of the students in my classroom are students with autism, speech language delays, or social/emotional disabilities.
