My Students

"Innovation distinguishes between a leader and a follower," Steve Jobs. My 2nd graders are developing skills of being critical thinkers, as well as creative thinkers. They are filled with wonder about the world around them, and have great potential to become the innovative leaders of tomorrow.

Most of my students are second language learners, and I encourage them to nurture their home language while they are learning English.

I also want them to have the opportunity of exploring a third language, the language of Code. They have an eagerness and willingness to learn and explore new concepts without fear. Giving them opportunities to explore, work collaboratively, make mistakes, and figure out different ways to solve their problem is a life skill that will help them become innovative leaders. Our mantra this year has been to "persevere." When concepts or tasks are challenging, we honor the difficulty we went through, because the learning and creativity that came out of it is meaningful.

My Project

Learning another language is difficult, but giving them an opportunity to experience Coding through adorable robots, like Dash and Dot, will make learning a new language feel like creative play. Students need more opportunities to explore and make things. I am excited to see their imagination unfold as they fall in love with Dash and Dot, and develop commands for them to move about our classroom or greet visitors as they come to our class. The STEM activities will also help develop and strengthen their skills of thinking critically and creatively. The books I chose will help me plan out engaging, real-world, and hands-on projects that will capture the fearless wonder my students exhibit. My students enjoy reading, but also love being read to. The Read Alouds are fun, encouraging, and inspiring.

"Play is the only way the highest intelligence of humankind can unfold," Joseph Chilton Pearce.

This quote sums it up perfectly. With this project my students will experience learning the language of Code through play and collaboration. Their imaginations will be challenged, and they will "persevere" and become innovative leaders, not followers.
