Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My school is a low-income school. However, just because the majority of my students are on free and reduced lunch doesn't mean that determines or alters the way I teach. I teach to the top. I keep it fun and engaging. Sometimes that's hard when you're teaching math (or STEAM activities) all day long and many of the students are below grade-level. But, each day we give it our best.

You have to try.

Is it okay to make mistakes? Yes. Is it okay to have fun? Yes. Math can be fun. I try to show my students that each day. Just today, a student said, "This is like art!" My heart jumped! I want to make learning math and science feel like that for them all the time.

My Project

I try to incorporate as much literacy as possible into my mathematics lessons, whether by writing or reading. My students have sat listening to Eric Carle's, The Grouchy Ladybug, with clocks in their hand, changing their own clocks to the time on the page excitedly with each turn of the page.

I love seeing their excitement about a book, all the while not necessarily realizing they are learning math.

It’s my goal to create more of that excitement across the curriculum by integrating more science, technology, and art into our lessons. These books will allow us to learn about real-world situations and create more collaboration within these content areas. We will be able to use books about trees and seeds while measuring and collecting data. The possibilities are absolutely endless. It’s fun to put the options in my student’s hands and see where their imaginations lead.

I thank you in advance for supporting mine and my students’ growth and adventures to learn as much as we possibly can.
