My Students

Daniel J. Boorstin said, "The traveler was active; he went strenuously in search of people, of adventure, of experience. The tourist is passive; he expects interesting things to happen to him. He goes 'sight-seeing.'" In my classroom, I want students to be travelers, not tourists.

Every year a new set of students walks through my doors from various places, living situations, and walks of life.

Some are from single-parent families, while others live in a home with any number of relatives; some have no expectations of going to college, while others have expectations to go beyond; some go home to a DS and eat out every night, while others go home to no electricity and possibly food on the table. However, one quality almost every single student possesses in these classes is the inability to read on the 9th grade level. On average, the 30 students in my basic English 9 class read at the 4th grade level. I strive each day to find materials to encourage them to want to read, to want to learn to read, to give them the skills they need so they can go to college, if they so choose. I push them in every way I can think of to gain the skills they need to be self-sufficient when they leave. These students are my future. I need to help them reach their potential.

My Project

The Seventh Expert is not just a book about medieval times--it is an ever-changing adventure. In the beginning, the reader discovers he has been chosen as the leader of a newly homeless community and must make decisions that will determine their survival over the course of seven years. With the assistance of six experts--a knight, a farmer, a carpenter, a blacksmith, a tanner, and a hunter--the reader decides what the community needs and must use his points wisely to make the right purchases. Buying goods unnecessarily will result in the failure of the community. Failing to build defense appropriately will result in taxation by local earls and dukes. Students must use deductive thinking, math skills, common sense, and an abundance of other everyday tools to travel through the seven years of the book. Little do they know how much READING they are actually doing! Not only are they learning valuable reading skills, they are learning about history and how to balance a checkbook

I am currently doing this project with the bare minimum of materials.

My students are sharing their books (imagine books flying around the room), calculators (we have had three calculators to use for an individual class), and one die to roll (sometimes with a long line of students behind it). Our time could be focused on learning to balance our score sheets and finding those necessary items (housing and food) instead of other distractions. Even still, my students are begging to do it again!
