Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are amazing fourth graders, who deserve the very best! They are fun, energetic and creative, and I love to showcase their spectacular talents. The school where I teach is considered "high poverty," so some students do not have the same opportunities as others. Everyone qualifies for free lunch in the Title I program.

Despite our economic challenges, our community is very supportive and makes our little school a great place to learn!

Although my students are not diverse in race and background, they are all creative by nature and very different in the way they learn. Our urban school is located in a community that supports the arts, STEM, and extracurricular activities. Many students come into school looking forward to simple things like taking a photo, singing a song, or getting a hello from a friend. For some of them, this interaction is the only positive part of their day.

My Project

Our students will become film innovators. In our classroom, students will form expert groups and create their own films based on the subject matter that evokes their passion and engagement. It may be a historical film on their favorite president or a cultural film about diverse traditions. Students will use the video camera, light panel, green screen, reflectors, and microphone to script, light, narrate and film their clips. They will think critically as they use a variety of film-making techniques and determine for themselves which options best help them create their film. They will provide narration and steer their story from their own diverse points of view.

Students learn best by transitioning from film viewers to film creators.

Becoming creators means that students will connect with what they portray on the screen and be able to discuss it from a deeply personal perspective. A well-planned film, or even a short clip, can illustrate a point and spark productive conversation because everyone can provide opinions on the film topic. That communication and interaction between peers is produced by the power of film!
