Creating Equal Success through Technology

My students need individual access to technology as our school is increasingly relying on it through the use of a Kindle Fire. I teach in groups of ten. We need 10 kindles to access academic websites.

My Students

I am a Resource teacher with students of all grade levels, disabilities and achievement levels coming and going throughout the day. We are working on individual academic goals in small groups. Working with such diverse needs within a short time is challenging. But all my students want to learn.

I work in a low income elementary school.

As the Resource teacher, I am regularly assessing and identifying new students to participate in my support services at all grade levels. The teachers and I are constantly searching for ways to work together so students can meet grade level standards. One way to do that is through technology. It's portable and accessible to everyone. However, being a low income school, supplies are limited. I have very little in the way of materials dedicated solely to my program. I must share with other teachers. No matter how flexible they are, it is a constant struggle to get enough time with the right materials for preparation or active work time. Despite this, I have been able to advance my students and make some less reliant on my services. It is a big deal to the students, teachers and me when they do. I would like to increase the number of my students who "graduate" from my program.

My Project

My school has purchased two web based programs to support the struggling student. We work with Lexia for reading and ST Math as well. I think those are great programs to work with and see my students engaged and learning when they use it. I would also like to have them use the full version of mobymax.com. It is a web based program tailored specifically to my Special Needs students. We have used the free version so far and it very user friendly and engaging to me and my students to target their IEP goals, plan and see progress. I want to continue using the program but upgrade to the paid version to have more control. The paid version is $79 per teacher. I am willing to pay the membership fee myself if I have unlimited access to technology as the school cannot afford the extra price for such a specific subset of students. If this project is funded, I will be buying access to that program and using all three consistently.

My students want to be successful in school.

They have a high interest in technology. However, being Special Needs students in a Resource program, they and I are frequently an afterthought and asked to either make do without or share resources with the rest of the school. This is a logistical minefield and results in minimal progress. With our own technology, we will have the time and flexibility to devote to the programs--both school wide and specific to my program--to foster real progress.
