This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My pre-kindergarten students are enthusiastic "college-bound" learners! They are intelligent young students, but the reality is that their socioeconomic status and zip codes put them at an academic disadvantage as compared to their more affluent peers. They are in dire need of having access to quality materials, both inside and outside of the classroom. However, providing them with the supplies necessary to learn in this context is a struggle due to severe budget cuts.
For most of my students, this is their first experience in a structured learning environment.
I want to be able to make their first learning experience hands-on and fun!
My Project
Our Green Team in grades Pre-K through second has grown greatly the past two years! Our student members are enthusiastic and sincere about educating their peers, teachers, and families about ways to "go green!"
Some favorite activities are school ground clean-ups, collecting school recycling, participating in "Green Team Tip" announcements, hosting tables at school events, and leading ink cartridge, marker, and crayon collections to send off for recycling.
We are looking forward to starting back up when we return to school in the fall, especially after becoming a MAEOE Green School this past school year!
Student members have expressed interest in taking the crayons they were collecting and using them to make new crayons themselves instead of sending them out to a company to do it. They want to be able to make crayons to give out to students and families who may need them, donate them to the neighborhood senior center and Head Start, and use to give out during school events to help spread awareness of our broken crayon collection and the power of recycling! The requested materials (toaster ovens, crayon molds, and oven gloves) will allow our members to recycle the broken collected crayons to create new ones!
We are proud of the leadership efforts of our Green Team members. We want to continue to provide them with materials and hands-on opportunities to empower their love for sustainability and to educate others to make a positive difference. These requested materials will provide our Green Team members with the power to continue to L.E.A.D (Learn Educate And Do!)
