Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students and I are in a unique position this year, where over half of our students are new to our school. And my class will have half of those students. This is a big change for the students moving to our school and to our current students, and I recognize the critical importance of building a strong sense of community from day one. I've included a camera and photo book to help my students feel that they are a part of the community in the classroom.
Studies show that children who see photos of themselves displayed have higher self-esteem and a sense of community.
I hope to foster this community in my classroom by taking photos (and having students take photos) throughout the year to put on our wall. Our school has a tradition of putting photos in the hallway of students around the saying 'Once a Rocket, Always a Rocket' (our school's mascot) with photos of students throughout the years. It's always a hit for students to look at and remember what was happening when the photos were taken. Last year, students were sad that they weren't included on the wall, so we planned to make a board in our classroom with the same motto.
