My Students

My students are amazing artists. I would like to EMPOWER MY STUDENTS THROUGH ART by using new and exciting materials. Unfortunately, I am limited to using basic materials such as markers and crayons for most of our projects, which can be monotonous.

My art students are from low income families and have very limited access to luxuries that you and I often take for granted.

My students and their families don't always have the essentials such as food and clothing. My students do not have access to museums and travel where learning about culture and art is rooted.

My Project

Students will create an artwork inspired by the beautiful artwork and environment of South Africa. The Ndebele Tribe create the most beautiful and serene geometric patterns on their homes and buildings within the village. Their garments and dress also reflect their artistic flair. Not only is the art amazing, but the geography and wildlife are beautiful as well. My students will learn about the art and region of The Ndeble Tribe and create an etching on the scratchboards of an African Savannah animal with a geometric patterned border.

This project will EMPOWER MY STUDENTS THOUGH ART by giving them the opportunity to experience using scratchboards and the process of etching.

The majority of my students are African American. Learning about the beauty of Africa, the talent of the people from parts of Africa, and the amazing art will leave a lasting effect on my students. Coupling the culture with the new art process and materials will help them connect with their roots and cultures of the world.
