Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Not all readers are leaders, but all leaders are readers" - H.S.T. Every day we rotate through a series of rotations, each which targets different literacy skills. As the quote above indicates, I firmly believe that my students need to be readers in order to be the leaders of their community.

My students are eager to learn and I often find myself asking students to put their books away, instead of taking them out, so we can move on (because the book is THAT good!) My students work hard each and every day to raise their reading levels and take pride in their successes.

Our elementary school is a Title I School in Northeast Tulsa. We used to be a middle school, so many of our rooms are not set up in a way that makes multiple rotations/small group for elementary students easy.

My Project

With the materials I am requesting, my students will be able to make the most of their small group/rotation time by maximizing our classroom space for the best learning opportunities possible! With 26-28 kids at a time in my classroom, space, and moving freely, is often an issue. With the movable whiteboard and clipboards, students will be able to utilize more in-depth instruction/examples in small group and outside of their seats, the classroom rug will allow independent readers to move from their seats to enjoy a more comfortable reading environment (as well as make our classroom look more fun!), and the crates/mailboxes will allow a space for students to store their classroom materials without taking up table space needed for rotations! As small as it may sound, we spend an unnecessary amount of time moving, organizing and transitioning, which takes away from the time students are actively engaged in reading, discussing, and practicing.

This project will greatly improve our classroom!

Many of my students, while hardworking and dedicated, are currently reading at one, two or three grade levels below where they should be. As a result, students need to be learning/reading for the full amount of class time in order to put into practice what they are learning and build confidence in their skills as readers and leaders. By investing in literacy, my students are becoming advocates for themselves, their education, and their community.
