Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

This year, my students are working diligently to create a more sustainable environment within our high school. Using a program called Eco-School, our kids performed rigorous audits of the school building in an effort to identify ways to improve our ecological footprint. One of the major contributions our school makes to its impact on the environment is the total lack of recycling.

In order to reduce our carbon footprint, my Eco-School kids are creating compost out of recycled foodstuffs - however, healthy compost needs both wet and dry ingredients.

The mulcher and bags I am requesting will allow collection and mulching of leaves that can be used as dry compost.

Many students participating in this program come from other countries where language gaps and education gaps make their learning difficult. Rather than subject them to pen-paper or digital learning, we elect to do projects. Our city (Trenton, NJ) is a sanctuary city. More than 50% of our population is newcomers to our country. These materials will help them to feel active and integrated into our community! Thank you for supporting our classroom environmental projects. My students researched this project entirely on their own. They developed leadership and public speaking skills, explored their ecological footprints, drove their own project-based learning, and so much more. Knowledge of their personal environmental impact increased substantially. Supporting this project supports a fully student-led, student-driven environmental goal that will help to foster future generations of environmentally conscious citizens. This program was incredibly successful with my 9th graders. This reusable project will give the students who are coming in for summer school and fall semester next year a chance to have the same experience as my kids this year.
