My Students

Do you have positive memories of when you first learned to read? I will never forget my Kindergarten and First Grade Teachers because they made learning fun! They created a space where I felt safe to take risks and where I loved to be. I learned to love reading while looking at books in a stand-alone bathtub and in a dog house that was in our classroom. These experiences gave me the positive start that is so crucial for students' success.

As a teacher, I want to create an environment where children love to come and learn.

My first graders come from a community where families are working hard to provide the basic needs for their children. Parents are working long hours and many students are being raised by extended family members. Our time together in the classroom helps provide a community where children feel safe and develop not only academic skills but also the social skills needed to live a productive life.

My Project

In first grade, we spend a large amount of time together on the floor. The carpet will be a gathering place where we hold class meetings, read together, and hold number talks. Often conflicts arise since students do not have a clearly defined space.

The carpet will be a beautiful place to build our classroom community while giving each child a comfortable space of his or her own.

The rings on this carpet are evenly spaced and will allow my students to have their own spot on the carpet. Learning together will be enhanced by providing a place for all!
