My Project
At our Title I school in Queens, New York, our students face significant economic challenges, yet they bring resilience, creativity, and a desire to explore new opportunities. Many of our students don’t have access to extracurricular activities that foster both emotional well-being and practical skills. That’s why I want to create a hand-knitting club where students will learn to craft chunky blankets by hand.
This project requires chunky yarn in a variety of colors to allow students to express their individuality.
The goal is to teach students step-by-step instructions for creating their own blankets, helping them develop patience, focus, and problem-solving skills.
Hand-knitting offers numerous benefits for children:
• Fine Motor Skills: By manipulating the yarn and creating loops, students will strengthen their hand-eye coordination and dexterity.
• Emotional Regulation: The repetitive, rhythmic motion of hand-knitting promotes a calming effect, helping students manage stress and anxiety.
• Resilience and Confidence: Completing a project like a blanket teaches students to persevere through challenges and feel proud of their finished work.
• Social Connection: Working in a group setting fosters a sense of community and collaboration, building relationships in a supportive environment.
I am offering my time during lunch or after school to make this project possible for any student who is interested in learning. This club will provide an opportunity for our students to discover a new creative hobby, develop essential life skills, and experience the joy of making something with their own hands.
By supporting this project, you will help bring much-needed yarn into our school, ensuring that students can learn, create, and grow—all while fostering a sense of calm and connection in their lives.
