Middle School students are naturally social. Allowing opportunities for collaborative learning is key to their success. As a sixth grade teacher, I strive to enhance learning in my classroom by providing my students with a variety of opportunities to learn together. Flexible seating is a way to create collaborative work spaces for students.
Flexible seating supports collaboration, increases engagement, enhances physical health, and meets the diverse sensory needs of students.
Creating a variety of workspaces allows students to move around and interact with each other promoting teamwork, collaboration, and strengthening communication skills. Engagement is increased through choice based on things like mood, and the types of projects that students are working on. Flexible seating is more comfortable than traditional desks, and can improve physical health, focus, and concentration. Finally, flexible seating meets the sensory needs of diverse learners.
The portable lap desks and floor chairs will allow me to create multiple workspaces in my classroom. Whether students are working independently, with partners, or in small groups, flexible seating will be utilized daily by my students. I am also requesting funding for a visual timer. This will be a valuable time management tool for supporting the productivity of 30 students with only 45 minute class periods.
