My Students

As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, they come to school everyday and are optimistic about their future.

Our school's mission is to empower our scholars through literacy and guide them toward a future in which education opens doors for them.

By exposing our scholars to ideas and themes outside of their everyday reality, we move closer a world in which equality and fairness dominate.

My Project

During our "Activism and Progress" unit, scholars analyze social and political movements throughout U.S. history. They investigate the various strategies used by different movements to bring about change.

During this unit, our scholars are exposed to the Women's Suffrage Movement, the strategies used by activists during the Montgomery Bus Boycott, analyze the Black Panthers' 10 Point Program and delve into the various legislative proposals posited by the Black Live Matter movement.

To foster literacy, students will be analyzing a variety of reading materials, including primary and secondary source material.

"One Crazy Summer" is a perfect companion to this unit, as it focuses on someone my middle schoolers can relate to as she navigates through one of the most turbulent and exciting times in American history.
