Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have the opportunity to teach some of the most incredible students. As students who already have a love for the arts, they are looking to expand their interests and delve into the incredibly important world of computer science. All of my students are taking a huge risk by taking this course, and it's truly a privilege to teach such adventurous learners.

There is no exaggeration when I say that these students are truly preparing for their future.

Every year, thousands of computer science related jobs go unfilled, and it is a travesty that our students are not exposed to computer science before entering college. My students are individuals who have voluntarily enrolled in this course, and already possess an incredible amount of internal motivation to learn this content and set themselves up for success in the future.

My Project

My students are enrolled in an Intro to Computer Science course that focuses on learning to code using Javascript. With this language, my students are able to learn the foundations of computer science, and the basic structures common to many other computer languages. We are using an excellent curriculum package provided by the team at CodeHS, and I want to provide my students with an even richer educational experience by adding a technology-aided, visual art element to the curriculum.

With the addition of Sphero into my coding instruction, I will be able to provide my students with a tangible reality for their digital ideas.

True, the content of a browser window can be just as powerful in our world today (just look at the decline of magazine and newspaper printing), but when learning the initial foundations of coding, being able to see the concrete effects of what you tell a computer to do is really important.

These programmable robots (Sphero) will allow my students to experience an incredible STEAM (Science Technology Engineering Art and Mathematics) project by adding in a visual arts element to their programming skills. One of the incredible assets of the Sphero robot is their water-proof exterior. For this reason, Spheros can function like paint brushes, spreading color across a canvas. Known for it omni-directional capabilities, I will have my students channel this navigational versatility into a work of incredible artistic innovation. This project will ask students to create a masterful and intricate work of art that can only be created through the aid of programmable robots.
