Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

In my 2nd grade special education classroom at PS 5 in the South Bronx, learning can be particularly difficult. My students, many of whom have emotional disorders coupled with learning disabilities, are increasingly aware they are far behind their "general education" peers, and grow frustrated at their low performance. Technology within the classroom is a fun way for them to work on basic skills while feeling a sense of success. PS 5 has made two computers available for my students, along with special-education-specific programs that present things like elementary math, reading, and phonics in a fun way. Many of these programs have progress reports and certificates that can be earned at each level, but we have no way of printing out these achievements. Additionally, my students enjoy working on their alphabetic and writing skills by typing things into word processing programs, and would love to print their creations to give to others. We'd also like to research and print pictures for whatever new unit we're studying. Evidence of success is a huge boost in self esteem and motivation for struggling learners. I would love to get a combination printer/copier plus toner for our computer so that my students can share their work and progress with many others, including parents, visitors, and their peers. You can help students with disabilities access knowledge in a unique way while empowering them to stick with learning, even when difficult!
