Creating and Organizing

Help me give my students the tools to create marvelous projects: different glues to hold together unusual materials, watercolor paper to experiment with brushwork, and tissue paper to add color. Help me organize our curriculum materials in folders.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Poetry, real-life heroes, the joy of reading, wolves, animal adaptations, and ancient cultures...these are a few of the topics that my students and I will investigate this year. I am excited to guide them through these explorations and participate in their growth as readers, writers, artists, storytellers, and individuals.

Our goal as a bilingual community is to foster our students' development linguistically, academically, culturally, socially, and emotionally.

Our students come from mostly immigrant families from a diverse range of backgrounds. My families are hardworking and dedicated to their children's success. We seek to create a learning environment that is supportive, collaborative, and engaging, where students can develop their individual voices and creativity and have the confidence to share their thoughts and ideas. We want to ensure our students have the tools and skills to succeed in our ever-changing world.

As a teacher, I constantly grow and learn with my students, as together we explore new worlds, new skills, and new relationships. This wondrous process can occur anywhere and anytime, but with the necessary supports, it can be more fluid and constant, laying the foundations for lifelong engagement in learning and discovery.

My Project

In today's classroom, the curriculum is based on specific standards and guidelines to help our students succeed and survive in the modern world. In dual-language classrooms, we are constantly creating, inventing and adjusting this curriculum to best support our students and bridge their understanding between two languages. While this is a never-ending process, it is also exciting and allows the teacher to evolve and grow with her students.

Apart from the explicit academic standards, we also want to foster our students' creativity and problem-solving skills, and experimentation with new materials and media is a key part of that process.

Slowly, slowly, over the course of this year, I have had the joy of introducing (or re-introducing) my students to new materials: paint, collage, oil pastels. I hope to continue this project through the rest of the year, identifying opportunities for creative projects throughout our curriculum.
