Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Our school is home to a growing Horizon Program, a specialized initiative dedicated to supporting children with autism. As we continue to expand and enhance this program, our goal is to create a sensory room that meets the unique needs of our students and fosters an inclusive, supportive learning environment. This sensory room will provide a space where our autistic students can engage in sensory activities that help them regulate their emotions, focus their attention, and build vital skills for personal and academic growth.

The sensory room will make a significant difference by offering a dedicated space that helps students manage sensory overload, anxiety, and stress—common challenges faced by children with autism.

By incorporating specialized equipment, calming lights, tactile materials, and sensory tools, this room will allow our students to self-regulate and return to class ready to learn. It will also provide opportunities for sensory exploration, which is crucial for many of our students’ development.

Our students are incredibly special in their diversity and strengths. They each have unique ways of experiencing the world, and they often have extraordinary talents in areas such as pattern recognition, creativity, and problem-solving. The sensory room will honor these differences by supporting their individual sensory and emotional needs, ultimately enhancing their ability to participate in school activities, engage with peers, and thrive academically.

The goal of this project is to create a space where every student can feel safe, supported, and understood. We believe that by addressing the sensory needs of our students in a thoughtful and intentional way, we can help them succeed not only in their education but also in their journey toward greater independence and well-being.
