My Students

I teach in an urban setting on the south side of Chicago. My students come to class each day ready to learn in an engaging and safe space. Each day, my students receive instruction in reading, math, writing, social studies and science in a variety of styles so each student's learning needs are met.

With 30 students, it is often difficult to ensure that each student has supplies that allow and enhance learning.

My school is nestled in the South Shore neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois. An area that once had a booming economy has fallen to poverty and acts of violence. Despite this, all of my students come to class each day with a smile on their face and are eager to take on the day together. They are not only an inspiration to each other, but to me!

My Project

My project consists of basic school supplies for my students and some items to ensure an organized and inviting classroom. I chose items for my project that will ensure my students can learn to the best of their abilities and feel comfortable doing so!

For example, the simple request of pencils would allow each student to have one to call their own and utilize during learning.

In third grade, readers are responsible for finding evidence in their texts in order to make claims. With these pencils, students will be able to underline, circle and star evidence in order to easily find support for their claims.

Another robust unit in third grade is fractions. In order to further understanding of such a complex subject, I requested fraction strips and fraction circles. These tangible objects will enhance student understanding of fractions by creating a visual that would not be possible otherwise.

The third grade reading curriculum aligns heavily with social studies. For each new book we read, we locate what country and city the setting of the book is in. With a large classroom map and personal maps for student partnerships, students will be able to see exactly where our books take place and learn about the physical environments of each location.

With all of the necessary school supplies and an organized classroom, my students will not only be able to exceed in third grade but in their years beyond.
